About the redmarker maths app
How it started
It started at our dining table last Christmas. I had surplus annual leave and no fixed plans, just a restless urge to keep busy.
Every evening, my wife would sit down with a red marker pen and a stack of maths worksheets, freshly completed by our two children. Page after page, answer after answer. Forty-five minutes of tedious checking that neither of us would ever get back.
On a whim, I snapped a photo of a worksheet and fed it to an AI model to see if it could spot the wrong answers. It could. What started as an experiment quickly became an obsession. The redmarker app was born from that lightbulb moment.
We now spend the time we've reclaimed actually helping our children understand their mistakes, not just hunting for them.
If this sounds familiar, the redmarker maths app was made for you.
Who built it
Gary Smith
Founder, redmarker app
Gary is a software developer and parent who built the redmarker app after watching hours disappear to manual worksheet checking at home. He ships the iOS and Android apps, the marking API, and the redmarker.app website.
The product focus is practical edtech: fast, trustworthy marking for paper maths drills (Kumon-style sheets, classroom practice, and tutor homework) — not classroom management suites or compliance workflows.
- Hands-on builder of the redmarker maths marking pipeline (capture, OCR, answer checking)
- Parent of two children — the original users of every feature
- Publishes research-backed guides on the redmarker blog for teachers and parents
Education & Edtech Focus
redmarker sits at the intersection of parental involvement and teacher workload: millions of handwritten maths worksheets are still marked with a pen each week. We reduce that friction so adults spend time on teaching, not tallying ticks.
We design for privacy-conscious schools and families — worksheet photos are processed to return marks and feedback, with clear retention rules documented in our privacy policy. The goal is dependable marking that fits how maths practice already happens on paper.
